Xarelto is a prescription drug manufactured by the pharmaceutical giant Bayer and prescribed by doctors to prevent blood clots in patients. Xarelto may also cause uncontrollable internal bleeding that can lead to complications and even death. With numerous complaints to the FDA and Health Canada, lawsuits have been filed against Bayer claiming that the company failed to warn the public of the risks associated with Xarelto and purposely withheld the fact that there is no available agent to reverse the potentially fatal effects of the drug.

What is Xarelto?

Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is an anticoagulant (i.e. blood thinner) prescribed by doctors in Canada to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in patients since 2008.

This relatively new prescription drug developed by Bayer and Johnson & Johnson's Janssen Pharmaceutical belongs to a class of medications known as Factor Xa inhibitors and is taken orally.

Unlike older versions of anticoagulant drugs whose doses must be adjusted by doctors for each individual patient, Xarelto is prescribed in one uniform dose.

The most serious potential side effect, complication and risk caused by Xarelto is severe, uncontrolled internal bleeding that can result in death. When internal bleeding occurs near a major organ, the blood flow to that organ is interrupted, and as a result, the organ loses some or all of its functionality.

One of the main concerns is that currently, there is no known antidote to reverse the effects of this medication or stop the internal bleeding caused it.

In addition to severe bleeding, studies have also found that Xarelto may be linked to an increased risk of complications such as infection and leakage around the wounds of knee and hip replacement patients.

In 2013, the Digital Journal reported that the FDA received 680 reports of adverse events in Xarelto users across the United States. Meanwhile, in Bayer's home country of Germany, one newspaper (Der Spiegel) reported that, between January 2012 and September 2013, Xarelto was linked to 130 deaths along with 1,700 serious complications in Germany alone. In 2015, Health Canada reported that they had received 61 reports of liver injuries in patients taking Xarelto and the World Health Organization's (WHO) database showed 431 incidences of liver injury and in 23 of these cases, Xarelto was the only drug the patient was using.

Common Side Effects

While the most common side effect of Xarelto is internal bleeding, the severity may vary since some patients may tolerate the drug better than others. Some patients taking the drug suffer minor bleeding, while others experience bleeding that either leads to severe complications from blood loss or is fatal.

Other potential complications caused by this drug include:

  • Intestinal bleeding
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Brain hemorrhaging
  • Decreased hemoglobin
  • Peripheral edema (swelling of the lower limbs)
  • Dyspnea (difficulty breathing)

Such complications can be severe, even requiring additional surgery to treat.

Xarelto vs. Other Blood Thinners

While all patients taking anticoagulant medications have an increased risk of bleeding complications, reports show that Xarelto has been linked to a larger number of adverse incidents.

Despite the fact that the drug is marketed as being a superior alternative to other blood thinners since it's "one dose fits all" approach eliminates the requirement for regular blood monitoring, a number of recent studies have shown that regular blood monitoring may in fact be necessary in order to help doctors identify which Xarelto patients are at a higher risk of suffering from a bleeding incident.

Coumadin (warfarin)

Since 1954, warfarin – also known by its brand name Coumadin – has been commonly used to prevent blood clotting.

Unlike patients using Xarelto, individuals using Coumadin are required to visit their doctor frequently to be monitored, undergo blood tests and have their dosage adjusted accordingly.

Xarelto Lawsuits

At this time, Health Canada has received at least 1,100 reports of adverse events in relation to Xarelto.

In the United States, Americans have filed more than 220 product liability cases against Xarelto's manufacturers.

It is being alleged that Bayer and Janssen Pharmaceutical failed to warn doctors and patients of the increased risk of severe and sometimes fatal internal bleeding linked to using Xarelto.

Furthermore, lawsuits claim that Xarelto's manufacturers purposely and knowingly withheld the fact that there is no available agent to reverse the effects of the drug and misrepresented the safety and effectiveness of the drug.

Lawsuits filed against the companies responsible for manufacturing Xarelto argue that had the public been warned of the risks of irreversible bleeding, then patients would have been prescribed the drug warfarin, a medication in which internal bleeding can be treated by administering dosages of Vitamin K.
